ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must fulfill at least one of the four following conditions:

  1. ①Applicant must have completed 12 years of education, or is expected to graduate by March 2024.
  2. ②Applicant must hold a certificate equivalent to the "Certificate for Students Achieving the Proficiency Level of Upper Secondary School Graduates" or expect to receive it by end of March 2024 and be at least 18 years old as of April 1, 2024.
  3. ③If the period regarding the statements above (① and ②) is less than 12 years, the applicant must have finished preparatory course as issued by the Japanese Minister of Education or expect to receive it by the end of March 2024 and be at least 18 years old as of April 1, 2024.
  4. ④Applicant must be certified as a high school graduate equivalent as issued by SHOBI and at least 18 years old as of April 1, 2024.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS

Applicants must fulfill all the following conditions:

  1. ①The applicant must fulfill the admission requirements, pass the entrance examinations and complete all required entrance procedures before the given deadline.
  2. ②The applicant must demonstrate a fluency in the Japanese language that is sufficient for studying at SHOBI in one of the following ways:
    1. A. Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 or N2.
    2. B. Score 200 or above on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) Japanese as a foreign language subject component.
    3. C. Score 400 or above on the BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test.
    4. D. Proof of attendance at a Japanese language school (limited to the courses predetermined by the Minister of Justice) and receiving Japanese education for not less than 6 months and pass SHOBI's Japanese language examination equivalent to JLPT N2.
    5. E. Proof of attendance at a Japanese school (other than kindergarten) as approved by the first condition of the School Education Act of Japan for a period of not less than one year and pass SHOBI's Japanese language examination.
  3. ③The applicant must have sufficient funds for expenses during the entire period of study, including living costs.

Proof of Ability to Pay Expenses Please submit any one of the following: a notice of remittance form, a copy of your (parent/guardian's) bank book, a copy of your (parent/guardian's) bank balance statement, or any other form of proof confirming your financial ability to pay for tuition and living expenses.
Proof of Family Relationship A copy of your certificate of residence in your country or an official copy of the family register.

SHOBI'S JAPANESE LANGUAGE EXAMINATION

Prospective students applying with documents as listed in Section ④ (Proof of Japanese Language Ability) with the option of either D or E are required to take SHOBI's Japanese language examination (written examination and interview) via the International Exchange Center in addition to the standard screening process for their desired department.
However, applicants who have passed the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1 or N2, scored 200 points or more on the Japanese language section of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), or 400 points or more on the BJT Business Japanese Proficiency Test and provided the relevant documents are exempt from the SHOBI's Japanese language examination.

Acceptance notifications will be sent by mail.
We will not be displaying results within the school. We cannot respond to any inquiries regarding acceptance.
We will send acceptance notifications on the day of the exam results announcement. It may take a few days to arrive at your address depending on the situation at the post office. We ask for your understanding.

  2. 'Living with Music' Entrance Scholarship
    Students who are determined to go to SHOBI, start preparing at an early stage and enters SHOBI through the AO Admission Application are eligible to receive this scholarship which is not required to return. Everyone's continuous effort and the desire to acquire the specialized knowledge and skills necessary for the jobs they are aiming for in the future will also have a positive impact on their learning after entering SHOBI. At the same time, we believe that it always lead to good results. This scholarship is awarded to prospective students with strong will to ease the economic burden of tuition fees. For further information please refer to the '2024 AO Admission Guidebook'.
    • Screening application requirement: Students who are motivated to study and wish to enroll in school through AO application.
    • Screening method: Review of their essays written on the AO entrance entry sheet.
      1. ※Screening result of 'Living with Music' Entrance Scholarship is not related to whether you pass the entrance exam or not.

  3. ★ International Student Support Scholarship(Available to all department except 3rd-year transfer to the comprehensive music department)
    This scholarship is awarded to prospective international students with a certain level of experience to ease the economic burden of tuition fees. Depending on the review results, the amount awarded will be deducted from the tuition fees paid during the entrance procedures. Please refer to P.9, 11-12 of the '2024 Application Forms for International Students' booklet for more information.

  4. ★ Japanese Study Grant
    Students that have attained a sufficient level of Japanese language ability, consequently enriching their future studies in SHOBI, before entering SHOBI can be supported with this grant. Depending on the grades or scores attained in designated Japanese language tests, the amount awarded will either be deducted from the tuition fees or returned. Please refer to P.13 of the '2024 Application Forms for International Students' for more information.
  5. Honor Student Entrance Scholarship
    Applicants who have experience, knowledge, technical training in their major fields or are recognized to have the potential to perform as representatives of the school are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants should be able to provide evidence that they have won prizes in competitions or auditions, received official certification, and/or have exceptional skills and knowledge. Please refer to P.14-16 of the '2024 Application Forms for International Students' for more information.

    This scholarship is awarded to applicants whom, through the practical examinations for each individual course, are recognized to have a certain level of technical skill and are expected to be able to display said skills while enrolled at SHOBI.

  7. Advancement Scholarship
    Upon recommendation by their department, students with excellent grades are eligible for a tuition deduction when they move into the next grade.

Note: If an international student achieves a superior score in the Japanese language portion of the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students) prior to entering SHOBI, they are eligible to receive a study incentive grant scholarship (48,000 yen per month for 1 year). EJU's past examination questions and study materials are available at SHOBI International Exchange Center.

OPEN CAMPUS

For a better understanding of the educational principles, environment, potential career paths after graduation and past achievements of our school, SHOBI offers open campuses for prospective students. We will have an information session about SHOBI, the departments, courses, and majors of our school, and there will be mock classes, trial lessons (group or individual), individual counseling and admission consultation.

    Check-in begins at 10.00 a.m. *The start time and end time is different depending on the course. Please confirm the time when you sign up.

OPEN CAMPUS PARTICIPATION INCENTIVES

  1. 1) Exemption from the Interview (All departments)
    If prospective students who have participated in the Open Campus receive authorization of the personal consultation session from the respective teacher-in-charge, will be exempted from the interview section of the application examination.
    Note that this only applies if the applicant applies to the department (entrance in 2024) that they has received the authorization from.
  2. 2) Exemption from the Practical Examination (Jazz & Popular Department/ Wind, String & Percussion Department/ Comprehensive Music Department)
    Prospective students who have participated in the Open Campus and been evaluated by the teaching staff in charge to have a certain level of musical skill, performance and musical knowledge during the Individual Lessons, are eligible to receive authorization from the respective teacher-in-charge to be exempted from the practical examination. Note that this only applies if the applicant applies to the department/course/major (entrance in 2024) that they has received the authorization from.
